When a homeowner in Coral Springs called iFixExpress reporting that their Whirlpool refrigerator was not keeping food cold enough and water was pooling inside at the bottom, our team dispatched a technician promptly. Refrigerator leaks and cooling drop-offs often point to sealed system or defrost components, but practical troubleshooting always starts with the physical fundamentals.
The Service Call & Initial Symptoms
The customer noticed two distinct problems happening simultaneously: fresh food items were noticeably warmer than usual, and a steady trickle of water was collecting beneath the vegetable crisper drawers. In humid South Florida conditions, any breach in temperature management can quickly snowball into secondary issues like excess condensation and ice accumulation.
Diagnostic Findings
Upon arriving at the Coral Springs residence, our technician began evaluating the external seals and interior layout before pulling apart internal panels.
Door Alignment & Closure Check
We inspected the magnetic door gaskets and noticed the fresh food door was slightly propped open, failing to seal against the cabinet frame.
Door Bin Positioning
Tracing the obstruction revealed that an interior door bin had recently been snapped into the wrong mounting slot, extending out just enough to hit the interior shelving and keep the door cracked open.
Defrost Drain Inspection
Because the door was left partially open for an extended period, warm ambient air continuously entered the cabin. This moisture froze solid over the evaporator coil and completely iced over the defrost drain hole, forcing defrost meltwater to overflow into the bottom of the fresh food compartment rather than draining down into the drip pan.
The Repair Process
Fixing this issue required addressing both the secondary damage (ice blockage) and the primary root cause (bin placement).
- Relocated Door Bin: Removed the mispositioned door bucket and reinstalled it into its designated track slot, allowing the cabinet door to swing fully shut and seat tightly against the seal.
- Defrosted & Flushed Drain Line: Used controlled hot water flushing and steam equipment to melt the thick ice block inside the defrost drain trough and trough tube.
- Clearing the Drain: Ensured the drain line was completely clear of ice and debris, verifying free flow straight to the lower drain pan underneath the unit.
- Temperature Restoration: Cleaned the door gasket and monitored the cabinet temperature to ensure air circulation restored quickly.
