On Saturday morning, our Hollywood dispatch received an urgent request from a local property manager. His tenants woke up to a Samsung dishwasher that was completely unresponsive to controls, running its drain motor continuously, and blinking its panel lights. With water safety systems active, our technician was on-site within an hour to evaluate the unit.
Initial Assessment: The Flashing Normal LED
Upon entering the kitchen, the symptom was immediately obvious. Even with the dishwasher door opened and no cycle active, the drain pump hummed persistently in an effort to evacuate non-existent water from the tub. On the console, the "Normal" LED was flashing rapidly.
Diagnostic Note: On most modern Samsung dishwashers, a flashing "Normal" light paired with an unyielding drain pump indicates that the onboard leak sensor (located in the bottom base pan) has detected standing moisture. This safety protocol—anti-flood mode—overrides all user inputs to prevent cabinetry and subfloor water damage.
Pinpointing the Leak Under the Basin
While clearing the drip pan resets the anti-flood sensor temporarily, running the machine without locating the origin of the water would guarantee a callback and risk flooding the tenant's kitchen. We disconnected power at the breaker and removed the toe-kick and lower access shield to inspect the sub-assembly.
Inspected the Bottom Drain Pan
We found roughly a quarter-inch of standing water gathered directly around the blue optical moisture sensor mounted in the bottom chassis.
Cabinet Extraction & Tub Pressure Check
We slid the dishwasher out from beneath the quartz countertop to inspect the water inlet valve, side air break chamber, and drain hose connections. All inlet fittings were dry and properly torqued.
Isolating the Motor Assembly
Tracing the dried detergent and mineral scale tracks led us directly beneath the primary wash assembly. Within 30 minutes of systematic tracing, we verified that the internal shaft seal on the circulation pump motor housing had degraded, weeping water down the motor casing whenever spray-arm wash pressure peaked.
Next Steps and Repair Plan
Because the circulation pump internal seal is integrated directly into the motor assembly on this Samsung platform, replacing individual gaskets is a temporary band-aid that often fails prematurely. The reliable, long-term solution is installing a brand-new factory OEM circulation pump and motor assembly.
Since our primary parts distribution warehouse is closed late Saturday afternoon and Sunday, we shut off the unit's dedicated under-sink water stop valve, dried out the bottom drip tray to silence the continuous drain pump, and communicated the action plan to the landlord. We have secured the OEM assembly for first-thing pickup on Monday morning, when our technician will return to complete the swap, perform a full wash-and-drain test run, and restore service to the property.
