The Service Call

A homeowner in Southwest Ranches reached out when their front-load LG washing machine suddenly refused to start a wash cycle. The door wouldn't engage properly, and upon closer inspection, the homeowner noticed the plastic door latch strike had snapped off during closing. Without a solid mechanical latch engagement, the washer's computer board cannot verify a closed door, immediately halting any cycle from running for safety reasons.

Diagnostic & Inspection

Arriving at the Southwest Ranches residence, we inspected the door assembly and lock cavity. We confirmed the outer strike had sheared off at the hinge bracket. However, the broken fragment was missing from the floor, indicating it had been pushed straight into the internal door lock switch receiver.

1
Inspected the door perimeter and verified the strike arm was fractured flush against the inner door bezel.
2
Released the front door bellows boot seal clamp to access the rear of the electronic door interlock assembly.
3
Discovered fractured plastic pieces lodged inside the lock solenoid track, which would have jammed any replacement strike and caused switch failure.

The Repair Process

Rather than condemning the entire electronic door lock switch—which would have added unnecessary parts cost for the client—we took an extra step to save the original component. We carefully unmounted the lock assembly, disassembled the protective casing, and extracted the fractured plastic pieces trapped inside the sliding contact mechanism.

Once the lock switch was completely cleared and verified for smooth operation and continuity, we mounted a genuine OEM LG door latch strike onto the door frame. After securing all mounting fasteners and reseating the tub boot seal, we aligned the door to guarantee clean, zero-resistance latching.

Testing and Results

We initiated a quick diagnostic test cycle to verify lock actuation, water fill, and high-speed spin interlock security. The door locked crisply on command, the cycle initiated without error codes, and the mechanism released promptly at cycle completion. In just 20 minutes, the customer had their washer fully restored to peak operating condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Door latches often break due to excessive force when closing, pulling the door open before the electronic lock has fully disengaged, or slight door hinge sagging that causes latch misalignment over time.
Yes. When a latch breaks off inside the receiver, plastic fragments can lodge in the solenoid track or contacts. Forcing a new latch in without cleaning out the fragments can ruin the switch or prevent the washer from sensing the closed door.
A standard latch replacement combined with clearing debris from the interlock typically takes an experienced technician about 15 to 30 minutes.
We strongly advise against it. A cracked latch can snap mid-cycle, risking water leaks, cycle interruptions, or further internal damage to the door lock solenoid.
