The Call

A customer in Sunrise contacted us because their LG front-load washing machine was not draining at the end of cycles. Clothes were coming out soaking wet and sitting in standing water. The machine was displaying error code OE — LG's drain error code.

Diagnosis

1

Checked the drain filter first

The drain pump filter (accessible behind the small door at the bottom front of the machine) is always the first thing to check — it's a free fix if that's all it is. This customer's filter was clean with no debris or blockage.

2

Ran a drain cycle and listened

With the filter confirmed clean, ran a drain-only cycle. The pump was attempting to run but producing very little water movement. Heard a slight vibration but no normal pumping sound.

3

Inspected the drain pump

Accessed the drain pump by removing the front panel. Found the impeller (the internal spinning component that moves water) was loose on the pump shaft — it was spinning freely without gripping, meaning the pump was turning but not actually pumping.

The Repair

A loose or damaged impeller means the pump assembly needs to be replaced — the impeller is not a separately serviceable part on LG's pump design. Our technician had the correct OEM LG drain pump in the van.

The pump was disconnected from the drain hose and wiring harness, unmounted, and the new unit installed in its place. Total time on site: 30 minutes.

A Note on OE Error Codes

LG's OE code means the machine couldn't drain within the expected time. It doesn't automatically mean the pump has failed — the filter is always the first place to look and costs nothing to check. But if the filter is clear and the code persists, the pump, drain hose, or a blockage further downstream is the likely culprit. In this case, a loose impeller was causing the pump to spin without moving water — a defect we see occasionally in LG pumps after several years of use.

Check your filter monthlyLG front-load washers have a coin trap filter that should be cleaned every 1–3 months. A clogged filter is the most common cause of OE errors and can be cleared in 5 minutes without a service call. If the filter is clean and the machine still won't drain, that's when to call us.

Frequently Asked Questions

OE means the washer failed to drain within the expected time. The most common causes are a clogged drain filter, a kinked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or a blockage in the drain line. Always check the coin trap filter first — it's accessible without tools and is often the culprit.
The drain filter is behind a small door at the bottom front of the machine. Place a towel on the floor, open the door, slowly unscrew the filter cap, let the water drain out, remove any debris from the filter, and screw it back in. Do this every 1–3 months as maintenance.
