Service Call: KitchenAid Microwave Combo F1E5 Error in Fort Lauderdale
A resident in Fort Lauderdale contacted us regarding their built-in KitchenAid wall oven and microwave combination unit. The microwave abruptly stopped heating and began displaying Error Code F1E5. On KitchenAid inverter-based microwaves, F1E5 signals a primary fault in the power control circuit or heating assembly, requiring prompt professional service.
Diagnostic Process: Testing the Inverter & Magnetron
Working on built-in combination units requires specialized handling since access to components demands partial dismounting from custom cabinetry and strict safety precautions against stored high voltage.
Safety Discharge & Cabinet Protection
Power was disconnected at the breaker, trim was carefully protected, and high-voltage capacitors were safely discharged before testing internal circuitry.
Inverter Current Measurement
Measured current and incoming voltage signals at the inverter board. The inverter was receiving power and trying to step up current properly, ruling out a control board failure.
Magnetron Resistance Check
Tested the magnetron terminals for resistance and ground leaks. Meter readings confirmed an internal short in the magnetron tube, triggering the F1E5 inverter protection shutoff.
The Repair: Magnetron Replacement & Testing
Because the inverter board was fully functional, replacing the shorted magnetron resolved the core issue. Using an OEM KitchenAid replacement magnetron stock from our service vehicle, our technician completed the component swap, verified electrical connections, and secured the built-in unit back into place.
Full functional testing was performed using water load heat cycles. The microwave operated at full power silently, heated water quickly, and completely cleared the F1E5 error code.
